Charleston
So, Monday we had parties celebrating the end of the term. Those students who passed were given certificates and we had food and games and Charleston lessons taught by me. We had three parties and since some of the groups were pretty big we split them and had them rotate through stuff, so I taught five lessons that day. I actually think that the last lesson went the best. In each class I had a handful of students who picked it up pretty well. I think they all got a kick out of the old 50s music I had on the playlist for the night.
So, the class kinda went like this: First, I would do a little demonstration and then assure them that I was going to slow it down to teach them. Then we would all get in lines and I broke it down by counts for them and counted us through it many times. Then we would try it with slower music (slower for Charleston). Then I would actually put them in Charleston lines, which is two lines facing each other and windowed. In a couple classes I had two sets of lines. I would turn on some music and they would go for it, but since they were always watching my feet I would rotate through the lines so they could see me at their perspective. I tried to teach a couple variations, namely ’stomp’ and ‘double kick’. I showed them a few other variations as well as Old Style Charleston.
It was so much fun, but I was exhausted at the end of the day. I got to the office at 10am, the first party started at 11am, had a meeting at 5pm, the last party started at 7pm, and I got home at 9pm. I slept well that night.
Sorry, no pictures of the dancing I was busy teaching it.
